Professor Nicolas Reina in the Conference

Discover the biography of Professor Nicolas Reina and his multiple areas of intervention

Prof. Nicolas Reina is an orthopedic surgeon at the Pierre-Paul Riquet Hospital Hospital, Toulouse. Its clinical and scientific approach is based on the interaction between the technical aspect of orthopedic surgery and the feelings of patients in order to assess the improvement of the quality of care.

Specialized in hip and pelvic surgery, he trained in prestigious institutions in France and internationally at the University of Oxford in England and at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester in the United States, in order to master the most advanced techniques to treat degenerative and athletic pathologies.

His expertise and dedication offer his patients high-quality surgical care and support. His practice focuses on primary hip arthroplasty, complex revision as well as pelvic or acetabular injuries. He has published over 110 book chapters and publications in international journals.

Professor Nicolas Reina has contributed as an author to more than 200 articles or book chapters and more than 200 papers at conferences in France and abroad. His work, encompassing basic and clinical research, addresses topics such as arthroplasty, fractures, sports injuries, cartilage, hip surgery, and orthopedic traumatology. His research interests include biomechanical analyses, the study of the impact of individual factors on clinical outcomes through a broad collection of digital data, and the ability of the musculoskeletal system to adapt to its environment (biomechanics and anthropological variability).

These publications can be found in various scientific journals, specialized books.

area of expertise

The most common surgical procedures

Total hip prosthesis:
Replacing the hip joint with a prosthesis due to cartilage wear (osteoarthritis) most often.

Hip prosthesis revision:
Replacement or revision of an existing hip prosthesis to correct dysfunctions, wear or after a periprosthetic fracture.

Conservative treatment:
Use of minimally invasive techniques such as hip arthroscopy, abutments and pelvic osteotomies to preserve the natural joint. The aim is to restore or optimize the congruence of the coxofemoral joint in order to delay cartilage wear damage and therefore slow down the phenomenon of osteoarthritis in the context of femoro-acetabular conflicts, dysplasias or specific pathologies of cartilage, labrum or synovial tissue.

Management of pelvic and acetabular injuries:
Interventions to repair complex fractures and fractures of the pelvis but also of the acetabulum (articular area of the pelvis) and the femoral head.

Areas of intervention

Hip surgery

The hip is an essential joint for mobility. Pathologies such as osteoarthritis, fractures or dysplasias may require surgery to restore optimal function, in particular after phenomena of wear and tear due to normal aging or following specific traumas. Professor Nicolas Reina uses minimally invasive techniques in order to preserve the tissue around the joints to optimize early recovery and functional recovery, whether after primary total hip prosthesis or revision.

Non-surgical options for hip disorders

Treatment for hip problems is not always limited to surgery. We favor a reasoned approach without systematic recourse to surgery, with conservative approaches, with an important focus on active rehabilitation and the understanding of the goals of each patient.Surgical but conservative approaches, such as the treatment of femoroacetabular conflicts by hip arthroscopy, hip arthroscopy, abutments and osteotomies of the pelvis, called periacetabular, are also possible management options before non-conservative or prosthetic surgery.. These minimally invasive methods aim to preserve the joint and improve the quality of life of patients without the need for major interventions.
